Shalom from Beit Luria Progressive Synagogue

Everyone’s welcome.

Beit Luria was established by Rabbi Julia Margolis in 2016 after she had moved on from her previous postings at South African Synagogues since 2009. We practice Judaism proudly and progressively. Our shul upholds the values that our Rabbi and congregation believe in, keeping up with the times and still honouring our forefathers and foremothers who came before us. We are proudly part of SA Union of Progressive Judaism and regularly take part in regional and national services with our sister synagogues.

You’ve stumbled upon a forward-thinking and agile Jewish congregation, upholding our core values of equality, diversity and inclusivity for all people from all walks of life.

Come as you are, as G-d made you to be

Our congregation is the youngest Progressive Synagogue based in Gauteng to be created in South Africa in over 50 years, and the first to be lead by a female Rabbi.

As a working parent herself, Rabbi Julia approaches her leadership of Beit Luria as she does her family: prioritising Hashem and humans above all else. She is supported by our Operations Team, Cantors Tulla and Brian, and a board of directors which ensures the shul  remains operational, innovative and forward-thinking.

Since early 2020, our synagogue has pivoted towards digital-only initiatives to keep us all safe. In a positive turn of unexpected events, this opened up the opportunity for Beit Luria to open our doors to people outside of Johannesburg, and we now proudly boast a congregation with members from all over South Africa, Australia, the United States, Ireland, Israel and London.

We welcome friends and members across all walks of life, with inclusion as a top priority for us all to our community. G-d made us in all shapes, sizes, colours and gave us the free will to love who we love, be friends with whoever we choose and stand up for equality and fairness for all.

If this sounds like your kind of community, join us today from the comfort of your own home.
