Beit Luria Progressive Synagogue welcomes applications for membership from anyone who is Progressively Jewish, or has an affiliation and friendship with the religion and would like to become friends of the shul.

We are an egalitarian synagogue built on traditional values with a modernised approach to learning the Torah and embrace anyone who wants to find a spiritual home to be part of, honouring the religion of Judaism at our core.

Our congregation of diverse, inclusive and welcoming humans who respect each other and welcome our differences and our common-ground connections. Inter-faith couples and families and all humans are equal in our eyes. After all, we were all made in Hashem’s image – and who are we to know which type of human is better than the other? We were given free will to decide who we are as people, who we love and how we live. For that reason, we knew our Synagogue would be one for all who feel this speaks to them.

Beit Luria offers online services, events and classes. Our wonderful Rabbi Julia Margolis is a breath of fresh air to an old and revered religion, and she embraces congregational engagement via several WhatsApp groups and on social media. Her rabbinic and lifecycle services are available in person around the Johannesburg area, and online for other parts of the world.

Membership fees

Our membership fees are considerably low due to our overheads being less than usual due to the pandemic.

  • Family (Couple with one or more children) – R333 monthly or R4000 annually
  • Single parent or couple with no children – R246 monthly or R2950 annually
  • Single person – R167 monthly or R2000 annually
  • Country – R125 monthly or R1500 annually
  • Rabbinic service fees available on request

There is a simple application form available for those who would like to apply for membership or become a friend of Beit Luria.

For Jews, Chairperson Lisa or Rabbi Julia will ask you to provide documentary evidence of Jewish status. If you have any questions about this, please consult Rabbi Julia who will be pleased to assist you. For non-Jews or Jews who are converting within the religion, you are most encouraged to consider joining the Introduction to Judaism course to learn the Progressive Judaism way of life.

Your community involvement matters.

It is very important that we affiliate with the organised Jewish community. As part of the SAUPJ, WUPJ and SAAPR, we feel that without membership support:

  • no synagogues would be built and maintained
  • no Rabbis would be recruited, trained or employed
  • no communal religious services such as cemeteries would exist
  • there would be no social welfare help for people in need
  • schools, residential homes and orphanages would not be maintained

Through your membership of a synagogue, your participation and financial support achieves a great deal.
