Seder Tu B’Shevat
The 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. Commonly known as Tu Bishvat, this day marks the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.
Please join us in celebration for Seder Tu B’Shevat a day earlier this Sunday, in person if you’re in JHB, or online via Zoom. Please RSVP via the form below so that we have an idea of the numbers. Once registered, we will reply via email with venue info and/or Zoom login details.
Please wear greens, browns or both. Bring along your seeds, pot plants, saplings to be part of the service to welcome in this special new year for trees. Please feel free to send us selfies of you and your favourite 🌳 or 🪴 to show your appreciation of the symbolism they bring to our culture.
For the Seder you will need the following:
- 1. A bottle each of red and white grape juice
- 2. One from each of the 3 categories:
- – Those with an inedible outer covering and edible inside: melons, nuts, pomegranates, coconuts, citrus, bananas, etc
- – Those with an edible outside but inedible pit inside: dates, olives, plums, peaches, apples, avocados, nectarines, pears, and olives
- – Those that are entirely edible: berries, figs, grapes, dates, raisins, almonds, wheat, barley, pomegranates
